FAQ |
- How much time it will take for students who are coming for FSU programmes to get social security number?
ANS: First, getting a social security number does take on average 5 to 8 weeks. It requires an in person application, so students cannot start this until they arrive. Second, a social security number is not required to be a student in the US. It is required if the student is working in the US , or wants to open a US bank account.
- The Indian students can work 20 hours in the campus? Or outside? From when onwards?
ANS: Yes, international students on J-I and F-I visas can work up to 20 hours per week on campus while we are in academic session. They can work more hours on campus during vacation times. On campus work is allowed under federal regulations, and only requires FSU approval. We do have several international students working on campus most every semester. In terms of when- basically as soon as they get a job on campus, they can work. Pay may be held until the social security number is issued.
- Can the students stay outside the campus after the first semester…? Or otherwise? That may be cheaper for the students? Is there any restrictions? Please advice.
ANS: FSU policy does not actually require international students to live on campus
For students who plan to be in Frostburg for a year or at least two semester, off campus housing may be a more attractive option.
